M30W User Game

Here is the official dev thread for our M30W user game!

Our first test is available for those of you who want to check it out!

texture_demo1: http://www.mediafire.com/?mznwnzqcjmn

Use the arrow keys to move, and the space bar to shoot.

Most of you (except me) work on windows computers so it is in a .exe format. When the final version is released, you will be able to download it for Windows or Mac. The sphere that moves around will become a cat as soon as I get a 3d model.

BTW, I need a 3d model of a cat.

I'm sorry, but the file is too big, so I'm not allowed to download it.

Could you please tell me what this is?

First, you should really make an Esc menu. Also, game over screen when falling off a cliff. Camera should be controlled with mouse (as well as firing). What kind of game will it be? Will this be a puzzle game, a find-the-clues game or an arcade shooter? I know that arcade shooters are easy, but I'd say a find-the-clues game will be better (well, if we won't make M30W, we can at least release and maintain this game).

I have unlimited bandwidth, which im really happy about.

Anyway, I agree with Filo, if we fail to release M30W, then we can atleast just make a game insted. XD

those are the kind of tips I'm looking for. that was only a texture demo, to make sure that the textures work. there is more stuff that seemed to be broken at the moment I made it so I turned that stuff off. but I fixed it.:)

Cool. So what is this game going to be like? How about a an adventure through a computer to find the M30W folder? And each level is a different sub folder,
So it would go:

Code:

Desktop
C:/ drive
Program Files
M30W folder

Had to put it in a code box because the drive showed up as C:/

Re: M30W User Game

No, too obvious. I was kinda thinking about series of rooms, just like in Cube, but linked together with wormholes (snakes'n'ladders style), so you can either go from room to room completing easier door puzzles, or try to access wormholes by solving wormhole puzzles - but you'll never know where the wormhole will take you. Ultimately, this would go on for 3 levels (and literally - each level is a level of a building you're in), until you're in a final room of level 3, where the ceiling starts to lower, and you have 5 minutes to figure out the puzzle to activate the final wormhole/transport to leave the rooms, which then turn out to be "Testing Area" for genetically modified human-cat hybrids (NOT FURRIES, cat-woman style) (Portal-style). Then, you take a gravity gun of some sorts, and that's when your cat-senses kick in, so you more or less know what's trying to kill you, so you can pick a weapon in time. The main point is to get to the creator of the whole facility and tell him to restore your memory from before the experiment. Then you have to kill him, and run away to the surface. That's when the game ends.

Re: M30W User Game

People are making their own HL2 mods around the world. And most of them are free if you have a Source engine (HL2, Portal, TF2, etc.) - And since I have some experience with map making, I could design the rooms.

Re: M30W User Game

Its not that hard to mod a game, If you have a game like Pirates Of The Caribbean, then all you have to do is go ino the files and re-write the C++ code. SWBF2 is harder but still possible, and with the right tools you can make awesome mods.

Re: M30W User Game

Currently, there are 2 engines that are widely used and easy to mod: Unreal and Source. I'd be going with Source because it has nice physics (which we'd use), and huge areas to customise. We may be even able to get some people from Portal Prelude team.
Also, more of the back story:
Everything takes place in Cooper-Martins-Braun Science Institute (CMB for short, a twist on Combine from HL2*), in year 2005. After Black Mesa Incident, CMB SI steals their data and uses it to create wormhole technology, which is tested along with genetic 'combines' (again, a reference to HL2's Combine) in rooms (3x5x3 rooms in game) with puzzles to solve. Test subjects are being led by a Test Supervisor, and observed by cameras. They may choose to solve an easier puzzle which opens a door into next room, or a more complicated puzzle which activates a wormhole-based teleport, which randomly moves subjects into different rooms on the same level.
The purpose behind it is to test the genetic combines and new technologies at the same time, so for instance in one room, there is a puzzle involving anti-gravity, and there's a room where you'll have to use primitive portal technology to redirect a high energy beam into a receiver in order to open the door, or to burn a heap of material which covers a teleport control.

*Although it is explained that combine are an alien race which steals technologies, we don't know much about them. In this spin-off, CMB science institute will open a wormhole, which by accident will bring first Combine advisers into the facility (seen in a cutscene after the credits). The advisers take on the name Combine, and steal all the research regarding the combines (later improved as Synths), and run away, to invade the world of Vortigaunts, and then Xen. And then comes Half-Life 2.
