Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

I was thinking that like Adobe Reader, you can open stuff up in it, but not edit it or make stuff in it, why not do that for Emerald? So Diamond is what you program in and you play the project in Emerald, less programming, right?

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

Yeah. Except we need Diamond to be at least in a beta stage for all platforms.

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

You can make two editions:
Emerald Full, containing simple project editor, Emerald help and sample projects, and
Emerald Player, containing only core Emerald interpreter.

And I also think about Emerald Bundle (Emerald Player + Diamond (containing Emerald help) + Sample projects)

About Diamond on other platforms: If someone knows Qt or GTK or has KDevelop, you can make it for Linux easier... Still don't know for Mac, but sure someone will come. Someone with the Objective-C knowledge.

Emerald Full, Emerald Player sound pretty good. Idk about the Emerald Bundle though...

Emerald Bundle is Filo's whole job. He creates the advanced editor -- Diamond -- for it.

If you ask me, Diamond + Emerald Player sounds like what the first post wants.

This should be the lineup:

-Emerald Player (just project viewer)
-Emerald Bundle (Diamond + Emerald Player)

If we don't manage to roll out Diamond for other platforms soon, then the Mac and Linux will be...

-Emerald Full (Basic Editor[python] + Emerald Player)

I also think if we do this, then we should name each piece in a more correct fashion. (I don't see the real point of calling Filo5's advanced editor Diamond)

Emerald (the running projects part) -> Emerald Player
Emerald (the writing projects part, basic editor) -> EmeraldEasy
Diamond (more complex/advanced editor) -> Emerald+

So:

Emerald Player = Emerald Player
Emerald Full = Emerald Player + EmeraldEasy
Emerald Bundle = Emerald Player + Emerald+

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

Good idea, Gersh. Should I rename Diamond? Or leave it as a codename or something?

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

But first we need to make the player... :P I'll go work on that, are we going to move everything to MintRiver.site90.com instead of gershmer.net/emeraldteam ? Cause I can upload my stuff there...

If it's easier for you, then sure. I will start enhancing my minimal Python skills.

I don't really care where it's uploaded as long as we have a direct link. ;)

Agreed. Having to click 'Download this File' on MediaFire is really quite bothersome...

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

But if we're going to make this similar to scratch but text based, then we would need to keep it in the same area like Scratch does, right?

What do you mean, gunk o' floppiness? (In the same area part?)

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

I mean that the text box where you type in the code and the area that displays the output should be in the same window, like what Scratch does.

Does that answer your question, Ger o' shmeriness?

Also, I have two more suggestions:
1. I don't think using Diamond as an editor for Emerald will work well until it can be used for any platform (Especially since I have a Mac).
2. EmeraldEasy, Emerald Player and Emerald+ should all be made in the same programming language (which would solve question 1, as long as they aren't made in C#)

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

Yes, I agree with Floppy ( Forget about the " o' iness" thing k? ) This needs to be compatible with all platforms without any delays here and there.

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

I thought that was the final goal to have Emerald+ ( It's NOT CALLED DIAMOND :P ) for all platforms anyway.

Not so sure what we accomplish by having all the same language. Scratch is NOT ALL THE SAME LANGUAGE. (If you look at the source code page) Scratch = Squeak, ScratchPlugin, etc = C.

2 Languages. :P

And there definitely is a way to hide the command line window in tKinter-based programs, so you need'nt (Semi-Olde English!) worry about that.

I hope to see your work soon, Floppy. (Emerald 0.4/0.5 Candidate)

Re: Emerald as something like Adobe Reader

To hide the command line, I read that just have the extension be ".pyw" not ".py" :D

Wow. It's that easy?

I knew it was possible, I just thought you had to code it in.
